TGN Artist Spotlight – The Adarna

The Adarna were fortunate enough to be in the Artist Spotlight and talk live via webcam with Joe Marino of the TGN Network.  Listen as members talk about doing music duets with Macho Man Randy Savage, their writing process, touring shenanigans and advice The Adarna put out there for upcoming musicians.

The Adarna are also offering upcoming film makers a chance to use 2 tracks from The Adarna’s 2012 album for free.   Please visit link for details:  http://music.tgn.tv/albums/adarna/

Tip for Musicians: Guard Your Livelihood

A familiar sadness fills our hearts every time we see bands posting that their gear was stolen out of their van. Sure, you can insure your gear or, even better, have van insurance that also covers the contents of the van (follow this link for quotes from van insurance brokers). While that might replace the gear in terms of the price of each item, it won’t replace sentimental items that so many band members have. Their first ever drumsticks, their favourite guitar, etc. Nothing feels quite as violating as being stolen from. If this has never happened to you… trust me, it’s sheer dumb luck that you haven’t been a victim yet.

In an age of social media where we flaunt our business to maximize exposure, advertise our thoughts and use the Facebook check-in feature to say where we are…. make no mistake about it… YOU-ARE-BEING-TARGETED (sometimes even before you get to the venue) and you’re making it easy for them.

This isn’t meant to sound like a Negative-Nancy or Debbie-downer. Protect your band; protect your livelihood. Everybody loves having drinks and having a good time after a show, but someone is watching you. Even if you aren’t noticeably being watched, assume that you are. Get everybody and everything home safe so you can rock again another day.

Tips & Warnings:

  • The smaller your band is, the easier it is to target you. You don’t have grips or roadies to help you load or watch your gear.
  • Giant U-haul trailers spell out wonderful “I’m not from here” and “I’m off getting drinks” signs.
  • Rotate babysitting duty with friends & members. If you’re going to get a smoke, smoke by your van.
  • If you get a bad feeling, listen to it. They’re called instincts for a reason.
  • Out-of-state license plate? Easy money.
  • Do multiple “idiot checks/ did I forget something?” checks before leaving.
  • Tag your gear and write down your serial numbers. It won’t stop theft from happening, but it may help deter and possibly recover your gear if something happens. Unlikely, but at least another band won’t walk off with your identical gear “accidentally.”
  • Never keep anything in plain sight. Not even coins.
  • Pin your trailer/van against walls when you park. I’ve heard of bands being stolen from while they’re grabbing fast food. And if that trailer/van isn’t covered by an A-class motorhome insurance, that’s a loss of livelihood right there!
  • Don’t rely on Good Samaritans to stop evil-doers. People now-a-days aren’t very confrontational, especially if they’re not sure what’s going on.
  • Don’t leave anything overnight in the van. I know your tired from rocking out, but man-up and put your gear in a building.
  • Nothing is full-proof in stopping theft, but this is your livelihood. You need to try and protect it. You can’t stop Nicholas Cage from stealing your car in 60 seconds but you can stop jerks with a screwdriver and a coat hanger from trying.

By simply protecting your band and your gear, you won’t make yourself an easy target. Trust us, people don’t walk up to you and say they’re stealing from you (at least, not very often.) They wait until you’re not paying attention. Are we being paranoid?

Ask any musician you know…”have you been stolen from?”

The Adarna and Yuji

Happy early Cinco de Mayo kittens,

Chozen, Yuji Okumoto

We wanted to give you something awesome to geek about with us…  Do you guys remember the bad-guy Japanese kid from “Karate Kid 2?”   He was whooping Daniel-san’s ass and taking the babe for himself in the final scene. Just then, somehow, to an orchestra of denden-daiko’s (hand drums), Daniel-san began to get all pumped-up and all super saiyan-ee (minus the blonde), and he defeated Chozen with a slew of backhands.

Awkward, impractical, totally 80s, and we friggin loved it.

Chozen’s character was played by Yuji Okumoto. A lean, mean, fighting machine. What’s going on with that guy these days??

He’s still acting in movies, and owns a local restaurant in Seattle worth scoping out called ” Kona Kitchen.” He’s also producing/directing.  In fact, The Adarna were honored to be chosen (or Chozen?? tee-hee) to have “Smell of Gasoline” be the background music for Yuji’s film, “Out.”   How awesome it that!?!

“Out” was recently featured at  The New Port Beach Festival and will also be appearing at the  Seattle International Film Festival from May 17-June 10th, 2012.  Definitely scope it out if you’re going!

Final Preparations

Yesterday, Headcaseradio‘s DJ beDHead, featured The Adarna on their radio station.  It was a perfect kick-off for this epic week to come!  As our friends, family and fans make their way to Seattle for the CD release party (on Friday) the band and team are scrambling with last minute preparations.  It’s almost like planning a wedding! (I’m sure anyone who is planning a wedding right now is shaking their head at my comment.  Psssh.  Dang girl).  I’m sure when we’ve got money to drop on some kind of coordinator, they can handle all of the prep work.  Until then, this DIY band is making it all happen…
What’s in store for the CD release party?  Well, we all agreed that we wanted this to be about the fans & people who supported us.  Too often do you go to your buddie’s  “CD Release Show” and it’s his band playing with a bunch of other bands.  They’re on a strict schedule and as soon as their set ends, they’re hurried off the stage.  You, as the audience, are lucky if you can even pull your friend aside to congratulate them on their hard work.
Afterwards, a select few go to somebody’s house to polish off a case of PBR and some cheap whiskey.  Seems kind of anticlimactic to me, or maybe I’m just prissy like that.   I’m sure to the musician, it’s very climactic because there’s a lot of stress to perform well and sell….but this event is about connecting with you, isn’t it?
So, we are doing the opposite.  We are throwing a party for you!  We’re going to play an intimate acoustic set, but we’re filling this night with a chance just meet & talk with our fans and supporters.  There will be a DJ, raffle tickets, goodie bags, a live artist, photographer and an open bar.  Our release will be held at Sodo Pop in Seattle…and guess what, we’re sold out! Nice.  May the force be with you.

Superbowl & The Adarna

The Adarna was fortunate twice this week!  Not only is it Jeremiah’s (our bassist’s) birthday, but  our music video is currently featured in Harley-Davidson stores and dealerships across the country!  WHAAA! To top this awesomeness off, we are also featured on Fox Sports Radio during JT The Brick’s show.  If you missed it, you’re in luck…We’ve uploaded it for you!   This was great timing! The Adarna’s spot came during a review of the Superbowl with a great anecdote regarding our name.  Check it out!  -Will
